This judgment of Norris J of 4 April 2012 concerns an inquiry as to damages relating to patent no 0481929 which was found after trial to be infringed by Floyd J in 2009, a decision later upheld by the Court of Appeal. The patent protects the apparatus and method used in the last of a series of steps for manufacturing kitchen and toliet tissue rolls from the unwinding and rewinding of paper from industrial rolls ("a converting line"). The patented step in issue is the gluing of the end of each length of kitchen and toilet tissue onto the "log" to prevent unravelling before the log is chopped into individual rolls for consumption.
